| Sligo's name literally translates as "the place of shells" due to the
abundance of shells found at the river and estuary. Its beautiful scenery was an inspiration for W. B. Yeats, who is buried in Drumcliffe Churchyard. Sadly, between 1847 and 1851 over 30,000 people emigrated through its port. |
