Glendalough, located in Co. Wicklow, is an
ancient monastic town established in the 6th century
by St Kevin. The Market Cross, which now stands in
St Kevin's Church (or 'Kitchen', as it is known),
formerly stood on the Laragh Road and may have been
one of the preaching stations for pilgrims coming to
Glendalough. The Cross is of a type that appeared
in Ireland only in the 11th century, with Christ
represented with an inclined head wearing a kilted
garment.
