Longford takes its name from the ancient stronghold of the O'Farrells (Long Fort of the O'Farrells). Lying in the central plain of Ireland, it is a county of rolling hills and picturesque stretches of water. Longford town is a cathedral town and is home to one of Ireland's finest cathedrals, St Mels, built in the 1800s.
