The Hill of Slane is steeped in myth and history and its
importance can be traced back to neolithic times. In
Christian history the hill became established as the place
where St Patrick lit the first paschal fire in direct defiance
of the pagan Kings of nearby Tara. The ruins of a friary,
which was restored in 1512, can be seen on the top of the
hill. On the west side of the hill are the remains of a 12th
century Norman motte and bailey.
